Body Metabolism
Building Lean Mass To Burn Fat

Body metabolism can be described as a physiological "fireplace".

By definition metabolism is "a biochemical process where the body creates, transports, and utilizes energy." Your energy comes in the form of calories.

When you feed a fire more wood, it burns hotter. If you fail to feed wood to the fire it will burn out.

In terms of your body, if you eat the food and nutrients that it needs, at the appropriate times, you will have a higher body metabolism then if you fail to feed it.

When you lose weight because you are drastically restricting your calories, your body has to look internally for stored fuel. It starts at the muscle which means when you don't eat you lose muscle, not fat. So if your goal is to reduce body fat, you need to work on your metabolism, which means eating plenty of calories.

What will increase your metabolism?

  • Improve your RMR by increasing your body's lean mass percentage, or simply build muscle. The higher percentage of muscle your body has, the more the body utilizes fat for energy.

  • Increase the intensity in gym! Rev up your routine by doing sprint intervals on your run instead of continuing at a steady pace. By sprint intervals I mean run as hard as you can for as long as you can for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Push yourself past the comfort zone and this will also help to increase EPOC or Excess Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption. Your body continues to burn calories at a higher rate after an intense workout. This can last up to a few hours after the workout. If you go into the gym and sit on the bike and read, your EPOC will be significantly lower than if you ran sprint intervals.

  • Eating a diet that includes lots of protein will help increase metabolism. The thermic effect of protein is double that of fat and carbohydrates. Thermic effect simply means some foods speed up the metabolism more than others. Get protein by eating plenty of lean meats, beans, nuts and dairy to build lean mass.

  • Eat on a schedule. By fueling every few hours and starting the day with a good breakfast you are constantly "feeding the fire". When you let yourself go hungry you are slowing your metabolism.

  • Perform full body exercises and plyometrics which get your heart rate racing to increase intensity outside of your cardio workout.

  • Best Aerobic Exercises to Increase Body Metabolism

  • Running: Although this exercise might have the most wear on your body you also burn more calories and use the whole body. Set distance or time goals for yourself. It helps to have something to focus on, especially if running is not on your favorites list.

  • Stair Mill: The stair mill is a revolving stair machine. This will provide you with a great aerobic challenge as well as give you a nice lower body burn. If you don't have a stair mill at your gym do it up Rocky style. Find stairs where you can. Go

to the local football field and run the bleacher stairs, or use the ones in your home.

  • Spinning Class: Other than being a completely intense workout, taking a cardio based class can be motivating when you have others around. You are less likely to slack, slow down, and stop. If you prefer to spin alone, many gyms provide videos that are useful when the room is not in use and you can have it all to yourself.
